PRIDE Learning Center is a leading tutoring company in Los Angeles and Orange County, for students with learning disabilities. Their reading and comprehension program has been shown to boost student performance almost 2 grade levels in just 3 months. The Orton-Gillingham instruction develops the underlying reading and comprehension skills necessary for students with dyslexia, auditory processing, visual processing, autism, speech delays, ADHD and other learning challenges. It is common to see years of reading improvement after just weeks of intensive instruction.
“Although the reading camp is intensive and highly structured, the teachers at PRIDE make it really fun and super engaging for the kids. The kids love it and we have families return to us each summer,” says Lauren Rice.

Saudi Arabian students with learning disabilities spend the summer at PRIDE Learning Center in Newport Beach, California.
PRIDE Learning Center is a very successful tutoring program in Southern California that for 10 years now has helped thousands of struggling students from all over the world learn to read using the Orton-Gillingham approach. This approach is highly effective for children with reading disabilities, dyslexia, auditory and visual processing disorders and speech delays.
This multisensory program involves the use of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic-tactile pathways simultaneously to enhance memory and learning of written language.
The results have been impressive. On average, after approximately 100 hours of Orton-Gillingham instruction, students increase their reading levels by one to two entire grade levels.
Created in 2005 by reading specialist Karina Richland, the organization has expanded from one single location in Los Angeles to 4 learning centers in Orange County, California and numerous locations in private and public school sites. “Our big goal every year is to keep expanding,” says Richland. “People keep asking me if I like what I do. Providing help for students who need it the most and while also running a thriving business – what is there not to like?”
This one-on-one specialized instruction does not come cheap. Each program, which runs 3 hours a day for five days a week, costs approximately $1050 per week. However, it is almost impossible to argue with success. How else would PRIDE Learning Center attract students from places such as Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Japan and India, places where there is no such kind of specialized instruction, to attend the PRIDE program.
“We have numerous families from Saudi Arabia attend PRIDE every summer at our Newport Beach location,” states Center Director Tamison Andersen. “These families that come to us really appreciate the program and are so grateful for the improvement in their children’s reading abilities.”
In spite of the intensive learning environment, the teachers and staff at PRIDE make the summer sessions fun. “During break time we play games and the children run around the room playing hot potato and headbands. Many of our Saudi Arabian families sign up for a few weeks and then end up staying all summer long,” says Andersen.

Summer is the perfect time to catch up on any learning deficiencies your child may have. By dedicating more time than is possible during the school year, a student can make a remarkable amount of progress during the summer – as much as a year’s progress in just 4-6 weeks!
In addition, working on skill-building during the summer months prevents further deterioration of skills – the dreaded “summer slide.”
At PRIDE Learning Center we offer an amazing summer program to help students enter the new school year prepared to meet and exceed classroom expectations.
Students attend Monday – Friday from 9:00am – 12:00pm or 12:30pm – 3:30pm.
Parents can sign up for any weeks between June 2nd and August 29th
We have locations in Redondo Beach, Newport Beach, Mission Viejo and San Clemente.
Struggling Readers
For students struggling to learn to read, we offer out intensive Orton-Gillingham reading program. Your child will work one-on-one with our credentialed and Orton-Gillingham Certified teachers (not tutors) using the best research-based and multi-sensory materials. At PRIDE Learning Center we specialize in helping children with learning differences by focusing on the underlying foundational skills that are preventing your child from reading.
Reading Comprehension
Designed for students who know how to read fluently but are struggling with comprehension, this intensive program teachers your child strategies and skills to improve “Reading to Learn.” The goal of this program is to teach children to be efficient readers so that they can learn the content begin taught in any of their classes. These are skills that must be explicitly learned, they do not come naturally to many students. At PRIDE Learning Center, our highly effective comprehension program provides students with the ability to conceptualize mental images that match content, and use language to describe those images. Starting at a concrete level and moving towards more abstract concepts, we are able to help students visualize the content of what they are reading.
Basic Math Skills
Our math program is for students of all ages who are struggling with basic math concepts. At PRIDE Learning Center, we build an understanding of mathematical concepts by using visual learning tools, game playing and exercises that engage all the senses. Our one-on-one, multisensory math program gives students a strong math foundation. Students master their number facts and numerical fluency. They are given the essential tools for a strong math foundation.
Writing Skills
Our writing skills program effectively teaches essential skills in careful order: from parts of speech, to sentence structure, to paragraphs, to complete essays. For the reluctant beginner writer, our program provides the essential foundation in thinking and writing skills. For the more proficient and advanced writer, it offers opportunities, strategies, and techniques to apply them.
